・Gambiered Canton Gauze (Xiangyunsha)

A traditional luxury silk fabric that originated in Guangdong Province, China.

Dating back to the Ming Dynasty in the 14th-17th centuries, it was favored by the upper classes from the Qing Dynasty to the Republican period. This unique fabric is made from high-quality raw silk and then finished using a traditional dyeing technique called "Dioscorea Cirrhosa Dyeing." First, it is repeatedly dyed with natural dyes extracted from the roots of Dioscorea cirrhosa, and then river mud from the Pearl River basin is applied. This creates a chemical reaction between the iron and tannic acid, resulting in a deep color tone and unique luster. Through this complex dyeing process, a distinctive fabric is created that is supple, highly durable, and gains character with age. Due to its rarity and traditional manufacturing method, it is still protected today as an important intangible cultural heritage.

・Deadstock Gambiered Canton Gauze

These are items that were manufactured decades ago and have characteristics that differ from modern new products.

First, the blend of natural dyes and dyeing techniques used by artisans at the time were subtly different, giving them a depth of color that is difficult to replicate today. Also, prolonged storage has led to natural aging, resulting in a softer and more supple texture. Deadstock from the 1950s-70s, in particular, often uses higher quality raw silk than is common today, excelling in luster and strength. They are rarer and more highly prized than modern products, especially by collectors and traditional craft enthusiasts.
